Warrior Reintegration: Chaplaincy Care of Veterans

Ministry with veterans has surely changed in recent years. There are issues on multiple levels: Trying to reintegrate to society is difficult on various emotional and psychological levels. Presently our warriors wear battle armor that protects their heads and torso. Often vets suffer from multiple amputations, whereas in the past the warriors would not have survived. Struggles with identity, purpose and meaning in life abound for these people. Two other issues that can often be misdiagnosed involve Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Often, TBI can mimic symptoms of PTSD and be misdiagnosed. A huge issue that many of our warriors struggle with is a new diagnosis called "Moral Injury." With the absence of “rules of engagement” by opposing forces today, many troops witness, fail to prevent or have to participate in events that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations. Chaplains can play a vital role in healing for Moral Injury. Finally, there are a plethora of resources available to assist our veterans; they simply need education. Understanding some of the vital resources will assist the chaplains in being conduits for healing with our veterans.
