In this session, Chaplain Kate Piderman describes her work with Angela (a pseudonym), a 17-year-old girl paralyzed from the neck down after a car accident. Angela's mother had told her, "If you pray hard enough, God will give you a miracle." Over time, Angela's mood began to sink and she challenged the chaplain, saying, "Why isn't God answering me? This is more than I can take! I hate being like this!" The case illustrates chaplain care with a patient experiencing intense spiritual distress. Critical responses to the case will be provided by an experienced rehabilitation chaplain and a pediatric psychologist. Chaplain Daniel Grossoehme will also comment on what this case contributes to building a model of chaplaincy care.
