As a result of the inclusion of Prolonged Grief Disorder in the DSM-5-TR, it is expected that more people will begin seeking grief counseling. And as many of the risk factors for Prolonged Grief Disorder are inherent in the COVID-19 pandemic, grief specialists have predicted that more individuals will experience prolonged grief. In addition to acute and prolonged grief, pandemic-related losses have increased the incidence of co-existing conditions with major depressive episodes and/or PTSD.

It is also important for individuals in helping professions to acknowledge and honor death(s) and/or non-death related losses experienced throughout the pandemic. This focus on attending to our own losses will help us to be better prepared for the anticipated increase in the number of individuals seeking our support.
